Tassal and the Tasmanian salmon farming industry

In April, Booker prize winning Tasmanian author Richard Flanagan published a new book about the Tasmanian salmon industry called ‘Toxic’. It raised a number of serious concerns about risks to Hobart’s drinking water, marine dead zones, animal cruelty and a failure of regulators to hold the industry to account.

Company Engagement

The Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility (ACCR) has previously engaged Tassal:TGR on its exposure to climate risk and is currently seeking a meeting with the company to discuss the issues raised in ‘Toxic’. We are also considering the lodgement of a shareholder resolution to request that Tassal formally respond to the issues raised, and potentially lay out a plan to transition to land-based farming.
